Thailand Launches TouristDigiPay for Crypto-to-Baht Payments
Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, has introduced 'TouristDigiPay.' This initiative enables foreign tourists to convert cryptocurrencies into Thai baht for electronic payments during their stay.
Deputy Prime Minister Pichai Chunhavajira announced the project on August 18, emphasizing its role in simplifying digital asset usage for daily transactions. The system does not permit direct crypto payments; instead, tourists must convert their holdings into Thai baht, shielding merchants from price volatility risks.
The SEC and e-money service providers, under the Bank of Thailand's supervision, will manage the process. A pilot phase is set to begin in Q4 2025, lasting 18 months.
To participate, tourists must complete KYC procedures upon arrival, opening two accounts: a Digital Asset Account with a licensed operator and a Tourist Wallet Account with an e-money provider. This framework aims to balance innovation with regulatory oversight, positioning Thailand as a forward-thinking destination for crypto-savvy travelers.
